Extreme Mission

Breaking glass is invigorating. And it’s easy to do. Just find a window, pick up a rock and throw. No special skills are required. The bigger the window, the easier it is to break. The 10/40 window of missions is no different. (If you don’t know what the 10/40 window is, read this.)

In order to break a window, you have think outside the norm. Why? Because most people do not want to break glass. It takes effort. Think about it, just to break our daily routines requires intentional desire to change. Hard work is what it takes to break out of our comfort zones. Because most people do not want to mess with the status quo, windows hardly ever get broken.

To break a window, somebody has to throw.

To reach people, somebody has to go.

How do you tell people in the 10/40 window about Christ? For me, the easiest way is to go.

David Livingston just “went” to Africa. He had six children. If he wanted to make excuses why he shouldn’t go, I am sure he had excuses readily available, just like you or me. But he went to Africa in the 1800’s and told people about Christ. He broke open a massive window and the gospel began flooding Earth’s second largest continent with hope and light.

Last April I climbed in the 10/40 window. I went to Tajikistan and told people about Christ. I made friends there with people of different beliefs and different cultures. Our friendships have lasted. Even now as I preach on the other side of the world we talk about important spiritual things like eternal life. We use current technology and discuss what God requires of His creation. We talk about mercy, grace, and the love of Christ.

I am no David Livingstone, but my window is just as big. After all, isn’t Asia the world’s largest continent? I have picked up the Rock named Jesus. In my weakness, I threw Him with all my strength. He and He alone smashed the window, and I climbed in. As far as I know, no one converted from his or her Muslim faith to embrace Christ, but gospel light flowed out of my heart.

To speak plainly, God gave me favor with the people. I lived in their homes. I listened to their questions. We ate together and discussed Christ openly. I touched lives from other nations as well, such as Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and even Kenya, Ethiopia, Russia and others.*

You and I have windows to break today. Jesus is the Rock. We must lift Him up. Get ready to hurl Him. He can shatter big windows. He can break Satan’s strongholds so that His grace and light flood in. His grace and light will bring healing, salvation and hope to others’ lives and spill over into our own.

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

2 Corinthians 4:6-7

*I will have to write about this in the future. God allowed me to be an American delegate for Capital City Day in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. I was openly known to be a Baptist pastor and met other delegates from over 30 other countries. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner together for 3 days, preceding the event.
