Reaching for the Hard-to-Get, High and Inconvenient Fruit
Why? Why would I go for the difficult fruit? Well, before I answer that, why would someone go for the easy fruit? Just because it’s easy? Or, would someone go for the easy fruit for the sake of logic? Why not go for the fruit that is the easiest and least expensive to reach?
Hey, I get it. It makes total sense to go for low-hanging fruit. Why go for the high, difficult fruit when you can just reach out and get the easy fruit? Here’s the thing—we are talking about souls, not apples or cherries.
Remember the story that Jesus told about the two sons?
“But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.”
Jesus in Matthew 21:28-30
The truth is, I am first son. I often tell Jesus no, and then later repent. I have said no to reaching those who are hard to reach for various reasons. In fact, I have said no to reaching isolated souls because of the millions who are all around us who are without Christ.
But then I realized it was Jesus who told us to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. I am reaching for the high-hanging fruit because God has called us to the task. He told us to go to the far-flung reaches on the edge of civilization and bear witness of Christ to those who have never heard.
It’s hard, it’s expensive, and some think it’s illogical. But it is my calling. I am called to reach the isolated and hard to reach for Christ. I am called to reap the high-hanging fruit.
But what about the low-hanging fruit? That’s no problem. I’ll reach for that fruit as I make my way up to the perfect will of God for my life.
We have to reach both, the near, the far and everyone in between.
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” —Mark 16:15
